Gloucester City Council announces continued support for veterans

Gloucester City Council has made clear its commitment to supporting veterans and their families by continuing the Housing Benefit War Pension Disregard Policy.

This policy ensures that people receiving war disablement pensions, war widow or widowers’ pensions or payment under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme get extra protection when their Housing Benefit is calculated.

Normally, the Housing Benefit Regulations require that the first £10 of income from these pensions be ignored in benefit assessments.

However, at yesterday’s cabinet meeting councillors agreed that the council would completely disregard these payments.

This means that disabled veterans and the families of those who died in service will not lose out on their Housing Benefit.

The cost of this policy is fully covered by the City Council.

Cllr Declan Wilson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Resources at Gloucester City Council, said: “By continuing this policy, we show our dedication and commitment to honouring the service of our veterans and their families.”
