Mayor thanks pair for services to the community
The Mayor’s Medal is given to people nominated by the mayor who have made important and significant contributions to the city.
The presentation took place in the city council’s Civic Suite and was attended by The Sheriff and Deputy Mayor of Gloucester, Councillor Justin Hudson and the Mayor’s Consort, Mr Denzil Williams.
Robert Perkins was awarded a medal for his devotion to volunteering for the Royal British Legion, both locally and nationally.
He also helps run the Gloucestershire Police Cadets that supports young people to make a difference in their community, building character and confidence.
For over 24 years he worked as an ambulance transport driver and currently works part time as a porter for the NHS.
Laura Bullivant was also given a Mayor’s Medal for her voluntary work in supporting the Ukrainian community and refugees arriving in the city.
She has also raised money for aid for Ukraine and to help refurbish the Ukrainian Church hall, including requesting donations instead of birthday presents.
Having only intended to raise enough to refurbish the floor, generous discounts from local businesses and a grant from the county council’s Build Back Better Fund meant she was also able to replace some of the furniture and facilities for users.
The hall is a vital hub for the Gloucester Ukrainian community, which hosts gatherings including a large number of refugees as well as the settled Ukrainian community and other groups from the local area.
Mayor of Gloucester, Councillor Kathy Williams, said: “I’m delighted to be recognising both of these residents for their dedication and service to our community. Laura has spent many hours volunteering on top of looking after her family and working, and is a great ambassador for Gloucester. Bob is also a very worthy recipient and is always helpful, considerate and cheerful. I’d like to thank them for everything they’ve done and to congratulate them both.”
