The death of Her Majesty The Queen
“On behalf of all councillors and staff of Gloucester City Council, and all the residents of the City of Gloucester, we would like to express how very sad we all are at the news of Her Majesty The Queen’s death. We send our sincere condolences to the Royal Family.
Gloucester’s connection to the Royal Family is very special and historic, and Her Majesty visited the city a number of times during her reign. On each occasion her warmth toward the people of Gloucester, and vice versa, was clear and wholly felt.
Her Majesty’s commitment to her role and to the people of the Commonwealth will be unrivalled in our lifetime. She was a tremendous ambassador for Britain and an example to everyone.
We know people in Gloucester will want to pay their respects to a sovereign who has left an indelible mark on the fabric of our country. A book of condolence will be opened at the Museum of Gloucester, Brunswick Road. For those who cannot attend the museum an e-book of condolence is available at www.royal.uk.
As a mark of respect for Her Majesty the Queen, flags on all city council buildings are being flown at half-mast.”
We are currently reviewing planned formal council meetings and other corporate events scheduled during the official period of mourning.
Proclamation
The reign of His Majesty King Charles III was proclaimed on Sunday 11 September 2022.
The first reading of the proclamation in the county was read by the High Sheriff of Gloucestershire on the steps of Shire Hall, Westgate Street, Gloucester, and by the Mayor of Gloucester at the North Warehouse at Gloucester Docks.
The mayor made the proclamation, officially announcing the reign of His Majesty King Charles III to the people of the City of Gloucester.
Books of condolence & floral tributes
We know people in Gloucester will want to pay their respects to a sovereign who has left an indelible mark on the fabric of our country.
A book of condolence has been opened at the Museum of Gloucester, Brunswick Road. Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10 - 5pm and Sunday 11 - 4pm. An additional opening day of Monday 12 September will be from 10 - 5pm.

You may also sign a book of condolence at Gloucester Cathedral. Opening hours are from 10am - 5pm daily & 12 noon - 5pm Sunday. The Church of England also have a book of condolence open online.
The Floral Tribute location will be the grassed areas on either side of the war memorial in Gloucester Park.
Gloucester Cathedral
A Countywide Memorial Service to honour the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be held at Gloucester Cathedral at 3.00pm on 18 September 2022, the eve of the state funeral.
The Cathedral bells tolled 96 times at 12 noon 9 September 2022 following the death of Her Majesty The Queen.
